Meet the team

  • Dr. Donna Lyon

    FOUNDER | CEO | FACILITATOR

After battling with a laundry list of symptoms linked to her childhood sexual abuse and trauma (you know, depression, worthlessness, suicidal ideation, addiction… those kinds of things), Donna embarked on a healing and alternative justice journey that led her to sobriety, inclusive faith, boxing and getting a PhD. Donna’s background is in the arts, filmmaking and education and after a not-so-successful amateur fighting career, she decided to combine her passion of boxing with creative writing to help other survivors like her regain a sense of agency over their body and trauma. Since getting her life together, Donna has run two half and two full marathons, hobbled through a 55km trail run, fought five times, won once, produced an independent feature film ‘Disclosure’ (check it out on Stan), co-edited a book and set up Left Write Hook. How’s that for getting some justice?

  • Maryanne Dib

HEAD OF PROGRAMS | TRAINING | LEAD FACILITATOR

“From abandonment at birth to child abuse, from children’s homes to homelessness - repeated abuse and trauma symptoms was all that I knew. This was my norm. Fight, survive, and repeat. Until I found a reason to live through boxing. I saw power and strength through my training to keep standing up and moving forward.”

Today Maryanne holds multiple degrees as well as an MBA. She closed the door on her successful corporate roles to follow her true passion - helping people be stronger inside and out through the art and sport of boxing.

Maryanne is the proud owner and operator of 9Round Bentleigh kickboxing gym. She also works within the community adopting a trauma and violence informed approach that encourages young people to be more physically active, develop new skill set and feel strong and connected to their body.

  • Susan Eldridge

    GROUP TRAINER | FACILITATOR

On paper, Susan's list of achievements as a professional classical musician, entrepreneur, university lecturer, podcast host and consultant are impressive. What's not included in this list of achievements is the story of childhood sexual abuse by a music teacher. Because Susan kept the abuse and trauma as a secret for decades.

During Left Write Hook in 2023, she ugly cried, wrote out the hurt then kicked and punched out her fury. She owes Donna about a dozen boxes of tissues and gratitude for not judging the filthy expletives that streamed out when she was boxing. As Susan navigates her way through the beautiful mess of recovery, she's proud to support other survivors to claim their story and strength as a Left Write Hook facilitator. The ugly crying and potty mouth might well continue, but she's giving less and less f&cks about it.

  • Sarah Chang

    GROUP TRAINER | FACILITATOR

“As a survivor, sometimes you’re in the ring fighting for your life, and sometimes you’ve got to be the coach in your own corner as well, yelling at yourself to not give up this fight.”

Sarah is a survivor of domestic violence. She is currently working as a lived-experience worker in family violence, has completed her Masters in Social Work, and is working towards becoming a personal trainer.

The moment Sarah chose to speak up and leave her abusive relationship was the moment that completely changed her life. This was not the future she had expected, and what would healing look like? Writing became an outlet that allowed her to put the truth into her story and rediscover her voice. Strength training became a way in which she learned to reconnect with her body and gain confidence from lifting heavy things.

On a whim one day, Sarah decided to google trauma-informed movement, and Left Write Hook showed up. She couldn’t believe it—writing and boxing as a form of healing from trauma? She reached out to Donna, found herself challenged and inspired in the 8-week program amongst survivors with their own stories, and now she’s back to help facilitate a program she believes is completely needed in this space.

Ambassadors

  • Jo Stanley

    AMBASSADOR

Jo Stanley is a performer, writer, and TV and radio presenter with 20 years experience in the media. She is co-host of The House of Wellness TV and Radio, and creator of the House of Wellness podcast. She writes a regular column for the Sunday Life Magazine, and is the creator of the Play Like A Girl kids book series. Her performance style, which is heavily influenced by her stand-up comedy roots, makes her a much sought-after MC and speaker.

Jo spent 12 years in breakfast radio, during which time she took 2 shows on 2 different networks to Number 1. She’s one of the only women in Australia to ever do this.

In 2017, Jo left FM radio, and having gone from on air host to listener, quickly became frustrated that there was no radio station catering to women’s interests and life experience (feeling over-tired, overwhelmed and over-looked, anyone?). So she decided to do something about it. She is now building Broad Radio – Australia’s first radio network for women, by women. Jo’s vision is a global community of women who are happy, healthy and fearless, connected by the transformative power of radio that truly reflects who they are.

Jo is passionate about women’s and girl’s health, gender equality, social justice and mindfulness. In support of these issues, Jo is a patron for Lighthouse Foundation and a patron for Wellsprings for Women, and is thrilled to have just begun as ambassador for Left Write Hook. She loves her daughter Willow, her husband Daz, running, meditation and the Collingwood Football Club, but don’t hold that against her.
